Summer 2008
The hot and dusty show trail is more fun than ever this year. Dave and This Cats Lucky qualified for the 2008 AQHA World Show in Jr. Working Cow Horse and Jr. Reining in just two shows and, as of the end of July, are in the top 5 in the NRCHA national standings in the Open Hackamore division. Dave has several other excellent open horses this year. Three have earned Open 2-Rein money: Rox The Boat, owned by Lynne Kraus; I’ll Be Colored Smart, owned by Frank & Linda Fanciullo; and Honeys Smart Chic, owned by Aurora Pacific Cattle Co.. He has some promising futurity horses as well: Hollywood Frosty Nic, owned by Colleen Aufiero and Shiny San Olena, owned by Arnold and Paulette Teves.

Stephanie is thrilled to have not just one, but two talented horses to show! As of late July, she is leading the nation in the NRCHA Non Pro Two-Rein division with Miss Cindylena. She was the NWRCHA/Reiny Day Quarter Horses Pro-Am Derby Reserve Champion and finished 4th in the Non Pro Derby with AP Miss N Memory, and the pair and has been sitting in the top four in the NRCHA national Non Pro Hackamore standings throughout June and July.

It’s been great fun to see Morgan Pozzi and her new horse, Cuatro Olena, get to know each other and succeed in the show pen. They have started to really shine in the Youth Limited classes, and we know great things are ahead for these two. Morgan grins from ear to ear the whole time she’s making her run, and we smile right along with her. Congratulations, Morgan!!

Most of the adults in the Northwest dread the day Walker Pozzi outgrows the Youth division. This is an extremely talented young horseman who truly enjoys the challenge of training. His mare, Lady Tom Tucker, has great ability, although she’s not always easy to ride.
Walker
makes her look easy and continues making positive changes in his horse. We’re proud to have Walker and Morgan in the barn!!
|
|
Speaking of youth riders that we don’t want to compete againstKenna Boyer is high on the list! She is as tough and determined as they come, and if her new horse, Doxinic, thought he was going to have an easy life as a youth horse, he’s got another think coming! Kenna is an NRCHA money earner after only two shows, and is in the running for ORCHA year-end
high point
awards! Not to be outdone, Kenna’s mom, Rachelle, made her first trip down the fence at a horse show at the ORCHA Summer Heat on the 4th of July weekend on her beloved mare, Smart Lena Annie. They did an awesome job and it’s just a hint of the future success in store…

Rhonda Denney and her roan mare, Miss Jay Glo, burst onto the cow horse scene this year and wasted no time climbing to first place in the Northwest regional standings for the Non Pro Limited (as of late July). Rhonda also earned the final points herself for “Rosie’s” AQHA Superior Reining award in April!! She enjoyed discovering that her good reiner LOVES to work cows, and we look forward to seeing this talented pair add to their achievements and start going down the fence!!
|
|
Jacki Yancey has been whacking ‘em on the fence with Nics Missy Lena, and their giant turns are the envy of all. They made a fast and furious run at the NWRCHA Paul Dice Memorial in June, earning a 73 against what were hands-down some of the toughest cattle we have seen all year. Jacki never fails to cowgirl up, and she makes some sweet moves in the herd work too!
|
|

|
|
Lynne Kraus has somehow managed to elude the camera, although she’s shown Rox The Boat in the Non Pro Limited at several events this year. Lynne and “Roxie” continue to impress everyone. Dave is the first to admit that Roxie turns around better for Lynne than she does for him in the show pen! We have paparazzi stalking Lynne as we speak, and should have a photo very soon. Riding talent comes naturally in Lynne’s family; her brother, Steve Ahlberg, rode with DQH last year. You can see his photo below on the paint horse, Tivios Perfection.
 |
|
Teri Harris and Funkyshines are making a splash in the Non Pro Two-Rein, Non Pro Bridle and Novice Non Pro Bridle. Between Teri’s exceptional horsemanship and “Smudge’s” exceptional talent, this is the pair to beat at the ORCHA shows! Smudge is also offered for sale to make room for Teri’s up and coming young horses, so check out details on the Sales page. |
|
Another round of kudos to Jake Waggoner and Miss Behavin Shiner, owned by Colleen Aufiero of Reiny Day Quarter Horses! Jake and “Phoebe” won the Ltd. Open Hackamore class at the ORCHA Summer Heat Show in July, and were 3rd in the Open. Their 142.5 made all of us proud, and added more than $900 to Phoebe’s earnings! This consistent and talented mare is also offered for salesee details here.
Spring 2008
We welcomed new foals by Shining Topsail and This Cats Lucky this springa healthy, happy batch of youngsters full of promise for the future!

In show news, Dave and This Cats Lucky wasted no time qualifying for the AQHA World Show in Jr. Working Cow Horse, getting it done in one run at the SE Washington Circuit AQHA show in
Walla Walla, Washington, more than holding their own against some extremely challenging cattle! The first weekend in May, they also locked down their spot at the World Show in Jr. Reining.
Jake Waggoner, Dave’s assistant, launched his show career with a maiden voyage into the pen at the ORCHA Drag N Fly Ranch/Penny Knight Weather Or Not Spring Show. He piloted Miss Behavin Shiner, a.k.a. “Phoebe,” owned by Colleen Aufiero, to a 3rd place finish in the Limited Open Hackamore, for his and Phoebe’s first NRCHA earnings! Congratulations, Jake! This good mare, pictured right, is also for sale see her listing in the Sale Barn.

Dave’s bevy of non pros also had successful outings at the ORCHA show: congratulations to Jacki Yancey and Nics Missy Lena in the Nov. NP Bridle; Teri Harris and Funkyshines in the NP Two-Rein, NP Bridle and Nov. NP Bridle; and Rhonda Denney in the NP Limited! Stephanie got a piece of the action in the NP Two-Rein with Miss Cindylena, a full sister to her first cow horse, Pecas Playboy, and also grabbed some earnings in the NP Hackamore with AP Miss N Memory.
 |
|
We are also very happy to add two more awesome youth riders to the program: Walker Pozzi and his sister, Morgan. The Pozzis just purchased Cuatro Olena (pictured left) for Morgan to show in the NP Limited and, eventually, down the fence!
Walker
is continuing with his good mare Lady Tom Tucker, and may add another horse to his show string at some point this year.

July 2007
Dave and This Cats Lucky (at right) continued to blaze a winning trail across the Northwest in the heat of summer, taking the Limited Open championship and sharing the Open Reserve championship title at the Northwest Reined Cow Horse Association/Caton Ranches Derby July 12-15 in Monroe,WA.
We also made the trip to Ellensburg, WA at the end of the month for the NWRCHA/Caton Ranches Futurity. Unfortunately, Dave had to scratch his mare after the herd work due to injury, but Stephanie was able to earn a reserve championship check in the Pro-Am Futurity on her “summer project,” AP Miss N Memory.

Winter 2007
Our News page updates have been in a deep freeze, so it’s time to catch up! Old Man Winter, as Dylan calls it, left a blanket of snow over the place for part of the season. Dave turned some of his energy to finishing the new kitchen addition on the house, and it’s beautiful! During the coldest days, he had to put a stock tank heater in the water tray of his tile saw to prevent it from freezing solid while he tried to work.
 |
|
The herd expanded a little at Christmas time, with the addition of an elf-sized Shetland mare named Bumbleberry. Dylan had been asking, very specifically, for a grey pony. Our friend Deanna Lally (www.StroudRanch.com) came through with an A+ graduate of her pony program, and Dylan was surprised and thrilled to see her tied to the apple tree in the front yard Christmas morning. See the video at www.YouTube.com/DuquetteQH.
In February, we were excited to welcome the Boyers back to the barn, with Kenna Boyer now mounted on a new horse and ready to become an NRCHA competitor in 2008! The Boyers purchased Doxinic, trained and successfully shown by Dan Roeser, for Kenna to show. “July” has embraced his role as a youth bridle horse and has settled in as a true member of the family. We hope to share news of their success in the show pen later this year!

September 2007
The Oregon Reined Cow Horse Association’s final show of the year, the Reiny Day Quarter Horses/Drag N Fly Ranch Watermelon Slide, happened Labor Day weekend. Dave and Stephanie were both very involved in the planning, preparation and execution, not only of the show, but also the year end awards banquet that immediately followed the last class on Sunday. Dave took home three year-end championships: ORCHA Junior Cow Horse and Junior Reining with This Cats Lucky, and ORCHA Two Rein with the APHA gelding Tivios Perfection, owned by Steve Ahlberg.
|
|
Kudos also went to DQH Non Pros Steve Ahlberg (below right) and Teri Harris (below left). Steve claimed the year end championship title in both the Senior Horse and Novice Horse Non Pro Reining divisions with Tivios Perfection. Teri and Funkyshines added more buckles to their collection for the Junior Horse Non Pro Reining and the Ltd. Non Pro Herd Work championships. Teri and “Smudge” also were 4th in the Junior Cow Horse year end standings. Stephanie claimed the year end reserve champion title in the Ltd. Non Pro Herd Work division with AP Miss N Memory.
The unfortunate news in September is that Dave will not be taking either a futurity or a horse show entry to Reno this year. His promising 3-year-old, Shine By Lady Nic, is recovering from a tendon injury and couldn’t be ready in time, but she is on track for some of the later fall events. This Cats Lucky is also coming back from a hoof injury that meant he couldn’t make it to the hackamore class in Reno, but he should be back in fighting shape by AQHA World Show time in November. Dave will make the trip with a pair of outstanding 2 year olds for the NRCHA Select sale.
August 2007
If you’re bored with news of Dave winning derbies with This Cats Lucky, stop reading now. If not, you’ll enjoy the results from the Magic Valley Reined Cow Horse Association show, where Dave and “Walter” were Limited Open Derby Champions by an eight point margin, with a 71.5 in the herd, a 72.5 in the reined work and 75 down the fence for a 219. That score was good for third in the Open Derby as well. Dave and Walter appeared again that weekend in the Hackamore class, where they were first in the Limited Open and 5th in the Open.
July 2007

Another proud moment for us at the show was seeing our good friend Josh Auman of Chehalis, WA (pictured above), ride Jeans Lil Shiner to the Limited Open Futurity Championship. The filly is by Shining Topsail, and she’s considered part of the family because her first few months of riding took place in the Duquette Quarter Horses program. Josh and the filly, owned by Kenneth Best, marked the high fence score of the futurity under judge Lyn Anderson. We wish Josh and Jeans Lil Shiner the best of luck in Reno!

June 2007
The Northwest Reined Cow Horse Assn. Paul Dice Memorial show was a very wet affair this year, but the rain did not dampen the performance of the Duquette Quarter Horses crew at the two day event. Dave and This Cats Lucky took 4th place in the Open Hackamore division and first in the Limited Open on Saturday, June 9th. Dave brought home a check in the Hackamore class on Sunday, and DQH non pro Teri Harris and her horse Funkyshines won their hackamore class on Sunday. |

May 2007
Dave and This Cats Lucky teamed up for first place in the Open and Limited Open Hackamore division at the Oregon Reined Cow Horse Assn. show May 19-20 in Hermiston. They earned a 146.5 from judge Matt McAuslan, and the win added $1,287.50 to “Walter’s” NRCHA earnings, now approaching $4,000. Dave also showed Tivios Perfection to 2nd place in the Two Rein, earning a respectable $562.50 for the paint gelding’s first time down the fence.
Exciting youngsters have arrived by Pecas Olena, Shining Topsail, and This Cats Lucky are enjoying their first few months of life here at Duquette Quarter Horses. We have quite a few for sale; check the Sale Barn for more information! Your 2010 futurity champion could be among them!

Dave achieved a couple of personal bests at the Snaffle Bit Futurity in Reno this year. He rode Pecas Playboy to the Limited Open Hackamore Championship, winning his long-sought-after NRCHA buckle and Morrison Bronze!
A photo from Dave's winning fence run was also chosen by the good folks at the Cascade Horseman for the cover of their November issue: Dave's first magazine cover! Congratulations!

The Idaho Reined Cow Horse Assn. Futurity was a good place to show for Stephanie and Pecas Playboy (left). They wrapped up their first show season together by claiming Reserve Champion in both the NP Hackamore and NP Junior Horse classes.
August 2006
We showed for the first time in Rupert, Idaho, at the Magic Valley Reined Cow Horse Assn. Futurity. The final show outing for Dave's snaffle bit horses before Reno was a rewarding one. He rode Honeys Smart Chic to the Limited Open Futurity Championship and 3rd place in the Open Futurity. Dave also took Reserve in the Limited Open Futurity and tied for 6th in the Open on his other horse, This Cats Lucky. Stephanie was the Non Pro Hackamore Jr. Horse Champion with Pecas Playboy, and had everybody talking with her score of 75 down the fence.

June 2006
We are pleased to welcome Colleen Aufiero of Reiny Day Quarter Horses to our client roster. Colleen sent us several youngsters by her stallion, Shining Topsail. See our Sale Barn page for details.
Congratulations to Terri Harris on her purchase of Funkyshines! Terri wasted no time achieving success in the show pen with her new horse. Terri and “Smudge” are dominating the Oregon Reined Cow Horse Assoc. Junior Horse and are likely to take home the year end high point buckle.
Congratulations also to Deanna Lally, new owner of Working For Chexs! Deanna will be standing “Bueno” at Stroud Ranch in Snohomish, Washington. She may also have him ready for his debut in the reining pen before the end of the 2006 show season.

Dave returns to Reno this fall with two SBF horses, This Cats Lucky (Catalano x Miss Lucky Tucker x Doc Tom Tucker) and Honeys Smart Chic (Smart Chic Olena x Starlight Honey x Grays Starlight). Both of these promising three year olds are owned by Walt Frederiks of Hermiston, Oregon.
We made more fun memories at one of our favorite horse shows, the Paul Dice Memorial, held June 9-11 at Spanaway, WA. Dave was in the top ten in the Open Bridle with AP Docs Little Saint, marking 72s in a very competitive class, and schooled his snaffle bitters out of the herd with excellent results. Stephanie, in only her second cow horse show, marked an outstanding 73.5 down the fence in the Non Pro Hackamore with her gelding, Pecas Playboy. We hate to mention her overspin and zero in the dry work.

|
The Oregon Reined Cow Horse Association show June 24, at the Umatilla County Fairgrounds in Hermiston, was a great success. We had positive comments about the quality of the cattle and the facility. Judge Bobby Ingersoll complimented the quality of the contestants, telling Dave after the show that he did not expect to see so many talented horses and riders. Stephanie and Pecas Playboy won the Rookie Cow Horse class with a 144.5.
| No, that's not your eyes; some guys just can't resist a chance to work a cow! Here's Dave borrowing a friend's pony to clear the pen at a club show. Too bad the cow doesn't seem very intimidated. |
